Chapter 1 Part 1/2
I opened my eyes to a gentle shake by someone. I was having a nice dream that I couldn’t even remember. I turned over to some brown eyes staring at me in the darkness. I yawned and rolled back over to go to sleep again. I was still tired from my late night training. The figure shook me a little harder this time. I groaned and sat up in my bed. I stretched my arms to get some of the stiffness out of my body that has settled in.
“Lisa, it is time for you to wake up. You must not be late for school today. You have a history test. I know that you are tired from last night,” the figure said.
I rubbed my eyes and let them adjust to the dim light that came from the hallway. The figure had pale skin with short brown hair. He wore a black sleeveless shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black cape that covered most of his body. He had ten tiny scars on his finger tips. His name was Fred Cret. He was my father and a vampire. He worked as a police officer at night. He was more of an undercover officer. He stepped away from my bed and left the room. He was very protective of me since my mother died three years ago.
I got out of bed and fixed my shirt to be straight. I had to sleep in my clothes since I was way too tired to change to my night clothes. I wore a black tank top, black pants, and black shoes. I walked over to my dresser and picked up a brush. I looked in a mirror. My short brown hair was all messy. I brushed my hair straight. I had greenish brown eyes. I put the brush down and went down stairs. My name was Lisa Cret. I was a freshman in high school. I was thirteen years old, and my life want about to change forever.
“Lisa, you need to be real careful. Your vampire powers will be kicking in soon. You must try and not to be so competitive when you play soccer today,” my father warned me.
“I know, Dad. I won’t be too competitive when I play soccer,” I told him.
I grabbed my back pack and put it on my back. I walked through the living room and waved good-bye to my father. I walked out of the house and closed the door behind me. I turned to my right and started walking towards my high school. It was a few blocks away. My dad always worried that something would happen if I wasn’t too careful.
My mother was killed by a purple skinned vampire that was called a vampaneze. I knew only some things about the vampire life. I learned about some the stuff from movies and books. My father told me that those were all a bunch of bull shit. There was only a handful of it that was really true. My father told me what parts were true. I had remembered that my father told me that I had a test in Mr. J’s class. That would be really wonderful. I approached a four story building. There was a story for each grade. I really hated going to school. Most stuff was really boring. I just wanted to sleep.
“Lisa! You should have waited for me!” someone yelled from behind.
I stopped walking and turned around. A boy ran up to me. He was near my age. He wore a white t-shirt and blue jeans. His green eyes sparkled with a loving look in his eyes. His name was David Glencoe. He was the quarterback of the football team. I was the captain of the girls’ soccer team. David and I have been dating for about two months. We were considered the perfect couple in the entire school.
“Are you ready for the history test today?” David asked.
“I guess so. I don’t like history to be honest. Mr. J says a lot of terrible things about vampires. That’s a little offensive to me. Vampires are people too,” I told him.
“You shouldn’t worry about it, Lisa. I think that vampires are kind of cool.”
“What do you mean by
kind of cool, David?”
“Vampires kill people when they suck their blood. They can turn into bats. You won’t expect them coming. You can never tell when they will strike. I really like the immortal part about being a vampire. I just don’t like the killing part. That’s all.”
There was something that I had never told my friends or David. I was born a half vampire. Most people would think that I was nuts. I was telling the truth. I was raised to never lie to people unless it dealt with a vampire. I already knew that one I would have to leave this place soon. I couldn’t get too comfortable with everyone here. I was enjoying my time here. I just had a bad feeling about today.
David and I walked to school together while holding hands the whole way. Some of my soccer teammates were practicing in the field. My first class was gym. We were going to play soccer. I kissed David’s cheek, let go of his hand, and ran over to join my team. I put my stuff by the fence and ran out onto the field. I got the ball and headed towards one of the goals. Ashley Coretell, my best friend, was the goalie. I wished that I had never tried to play against her that day. I really hated what I had done.
I knew that I was to have a real challenge with getting past Ashley. I loved to take her on sometimes. Ashley was the best goalie on the soccer team. She was always very difficult to get past. I kicked the ball and was shocked to see it flying faster then I normally kicked. My vampire powers kicked in! Ashley tried to stop the ball but missed it. She fell onto her right arm. My eyes went wide as I heard bones cracking in her wrist. I had hurt my best friend while playing among humans.
I turned around and ran from the scene. I knew what I had to do. I had to leave this place before I hurt someone else. My lungs tightened as I continued to run home. My breathing was becoming heavy. I reached my house and ran to the front door. I opened the door, ran inside, and closed the door behind me. I turned around and leaned against the door. I would never forgive myself for this. I still haven’t.
“You are home early, Lisa. What happened?” my father said from the couch.
“Ashley broke her wrist. I had kicked the ball using my vampire strength without knowing it. Ashley tried to stop it but broke her wrist,” I explained.
My father got up from the couch and walked over to me. He stopped directly in front of me. I knew that he was probably disappointed with me for not taking his warning very seriously. I prepared myself for my father to yell at me. I knew he would. My father placed a hand on my right shoulder. His hand felt a little cold. I looked at my father to see that there was no anger in his eyes. There was only sympathy and understanding. I smiled up at him. I really hated being yelled at.
“We will leave here tonight. You must go back to school and tell your friends that you are moving. You will need to break up with David as well,” my father told me.
My heart sank to my stomach. I knew this was coming eventually. I didn’t want to leave my friends or break up with David. I really loved him. I took a deep breath and sighed sadly. I turned around and opened the door. I didn’t want to leave here. I would like to stay here. I knew that I couldn’t stay here. I could hurt someone else. I had to leave before I needed to drink blood. This would be the last time that I would be able to see my friends and boyfriend. I might as well get this over with while I was able to.
“Lisa, I know that you do not want to leave. You must realize that it is safer for you to leave than to stay here. You might do worse damage,” my father said.
“I know, Dad. I just wish that I had listened to your warning,” I said.
I walked out the door and closed it behind me so that the sun wouldn’t hurt my father. I put my hands in my pockets and walked towards the school. Today wasn’t a very good day for me. Memories flooded my mind as I neared the school. I thought of my early life back in kindergarten and when I met Ashley. I spotted my friends on the soccer field. Ashley wasn’t there anymore. It was for the best. David ran over to me. He seemed really worried. I looked away from him and at the ground.
“Lisa, is everything alright? You took off without a word,” David said.
“We can’t go out anymore, David. It’s time that we went our separate ways. I’m moving away. My father found a new job in another city,” I lied.
I didn’t look at him. I wanted to stay with him forever. I knew that I couldn’t stay. I might hurt him as well. I had to see sense to this. I belonged in the world of the vampires now. I turned my back to David and walked away from him and my friends. It was time that I removed them from my thoughts. I left my backpack so that the school would have their books. I didn’t need them anymore. I left the school yard. My heart was too heavy with guilt and pain. I was hoping that I could get over it.
I took off running to that my friends couldn’t change my mind, I ran all the way home. I opened the door and went inside. I closed the door behind me. My father wasn’t on the couch anymore. He was probably sleeping for our travel tonight. I walked to the kitchen and saw a note on the table. I knew it was from my father because of the hand writing. I needed to pack some things for our trip tonight. I knew that already. I guess that I needed to pack some personal things so I can fell a little at home while on the road.
I walked to the stairs and went up to my room. I opened the door and walked in. There were two swords, a purple cape, and a gym bag on my bed. I walked over to my dresser and picked up some photo albums from my previous years here. I also grabbed my hair brush. I went over to the gym bag and put my stuff inside. I picked up a binder that had a lot of paper inside from my night stand. I put the binder in the bag along with a pencil and eraser. I made sure to pack plenty of pencils. I put the bag on the floor and laid down on the bed. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
I was standing in the middle of a forest with the smell of spring in the air. A small cool breeze blew through the trees. I stood there a moment while taking in the scene. I was grabbed by someone from behind. I started to grab for my swords. My captor pressed a knife to my throat that made me stop. I didn’t panic. It would have been the end of me. The smell of human blood filled my nose. I felt like I was going to bed sick. I looked down at the hand that was holding the knife. The hand was completely purple with red nails. My captor was a vampaneze! I growled to myself.
“You’re coming with me to visit the Vampaneze Lord. You better not cause any trouble. You wouldn’t want anything to happen to your friends,” the vampaneze said.
I cursed him under my breath. I would never go to the Vampaneze Lord willingly. I knew that struggling wouldn’t help me. My captor was a full vampaneze. I pulled a knife out of my front pocket. I was hoping that my captor didn’t realize what was going on. I would be in trouble if my captor was paying very close attention to me.
